Holidaying in Kerala

Summer in Kerala is quite sultry and I normally do not prefer to visit the place during April to May while working outside Kerala. By the first week of June, the south west monsoon erupts and the whole landscape changes drastically in the torrential downpour. This indeed is a great time for indoors.

This time, the visit was inevitable during April as I was changing my job and had a good month’s time to visit Kerala traveling from Dubai. In someway, this intermission is a relaxing time and in certain other way, it is a time of anxieties. But, that is the way the Good Lord has intended one’s life to be!

Visiting parents in Cherthala, attending the engagement of a nephew and going over to Chennai to see my daughter Lavanya, the budding and most demanding architectural student, occupies considerable time. Some torrential pre-monsoon rains, Elephants of Punnathoor Kotta, a mesmerizing musical evening of Pundit Shivkumar Sharma at Palakkad, a visit to Kumarakom, the exotic tourist spot to call on visiting friends from UK were all some bonuses, not to forget the sumptuous Mampazha Pulisseri (Ripe mango curry with yoghurt and coconuts) and Jackfruit Avial (mixed vegetable preparation unique to Kerala ) in the best tradition made by my mom.

The tour continues and I have to catch up with bit of writing too. Juan from Madrid reminds me of my delay in posts. There are quite a bit of loose ends to be tied.

Maddy, it will be a great time in August to be here after the rains. Enjoy the salubrious climate and a wonderful time. Do write about the changes seen from the eyes and mind of a sensitive Keralite settled abroad. Murali

Princely Coorg and Chikka Veera Rajendra, it’s last Rajah

Scenic beauty of Coorg 1990 O ften I have felt that we Indians in general and Keralites in particular know little, literally and figuratively, about our own neighbours. Coorg, Kodagu (or Kodaimala nadu ) often referred to as the Scotland of India was one of our neighbouring independent princely states during the British Raj. Madikeri is the capital of the present day district of Coorg in Karnataka. The history of the Coorg Rajahs is delineated in the Rajendraname, a work compiled by order of Dodda Vira Rajendra Wodeyar, the hero of Coorg history, and the Coorg beau ideal of a warrior king. It comprises a period of 175 years, from 1633 to 1807. The Europeans at large had the uncanny ability to record history as it unfolded before their eyes. They were also very meticulous in the details so that we are able to understand about various customs of ours as our forefathers practiced it. Missionaries like Samuel Mateer, Visscher, Spencer and Bartolomeo who visited Travancore wrote not only about the missionary work but also about the customs of the natives, the flora and fauna, Indian music, local governance and about the industries. Though we could find many a mistake in their observations and most often may disagree vociferously about many, we must admit that these were written out of their perspective and conviction and as such need to be respected.
